Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat joint problems. It involves inserting a small camera, known as an arthroscope, into the joint through tiny incisions to visualize, diagnose, and, if necessary, repair joint structures.

Common Conditions Treated with Arthroscopy

  • Ligament Injuries: ACL and PCL tears in the knee are often repaired using arthroscopy.
  • Meniscus Tears: Torn cartilage in the knee can be trimmed or repaired during the procedure.
  • Rotator Cuff Tears: Arthroscopy is commonly used for treating shoulder injuries like rotator cuff tears.
  • Cartilage Damage: Debridement and repair of damaged cartilage in the knee, shoulder, or other joints.

Procedure
During arthroscopy, the surgeon inserts the arthroscope into the joint and visualizes the internal structures on a monitor. Additional small instruments are used through separate incisions to perform necessary repairs, such as trimming a torn meniscus or repairing damaged ligaments.

Benefits

  • Minimally Invasive: Smaller incisions result in less pain, quicker recovery, and lower risk of infection compared to traditional open surgery.
  • Quick Recovery: Most patients can return to normal activities much sooner due to less tissue damage.
  • Effective Diagnosis: Arthroscopy allows for a clear and accurate diagnosis of joint problems.

Rehabilitation
After the procedure, patients typically undergo physical therapy to restore joint strength, flexibility, and function, ensuring a smooth recovery.
